Tarpon Fishing Books & Guide Books

Books about world-class, giant Tarpon

Tarpon on Fly.
Tarpon on Fly
by Donald Larmouth, Rob Fordyce; 2002; paperback; 96pp

"There is nothing that you need to know about tarpon and pursuing them with flies that is not contained in this book." -Flip Pallot, in the Foreword

Tarpon On Fly draws from two primary sources-the observations and knowledge that come with Rob's nearly 20 years' experience as a professional tarpon fishing guide, and the journals and the curiosity of lifelong fly fisherman Donald who came late to tarpon fishing but has savored every hour of it. The knowledge and experience of these two men has led to the definitive book on fly-fishing for the Silver King. Tarpon On Fly includes: in-depth coverage of tarpon biology and behavior; tackle; rigging up; flies for tarpon; setting up to cast; aiming and casting; retrieving; striking; fighting; guides and anglers; tournaments; references; and so much more. Clear illustrations and photography further enhance this classic. We couldn't have said it any better than Flip.

reviewed:"All You Need to Know  As Flip Pallot says in the books' introduction, "...there is nothing that you need to know about tarpon and pursuing them with flies that is not contained in this book...".

The information that Larmouth and Fordyce share within this book is simple, concise and as complete as it gets. Add to that Larmouth's wonderful narratives that preceede each chapter, and you feel like you are on the casting platform of the guide's skiff! I found the book both entertaining and instructional and the photography is superb. A must read for anyone who is serious about fishing for tarpon on fly!"

The Tarpon Book
The Tarpon Book: A Complete Angler's Guide
by Frank Sargeant; 1991; paperback 160pp

reviewed:"A wealth of information on tarpon fishing,   While some of the information on equipment and guides is a little dated, this volume contains a wealth of information on tarpon, where to find them, and how to fish for them. Enjoyable, easy reading with lots of practical advice."

Sea Level: Adventures of a Saltwater Angler
Sea Level: Adventures of a Saltwater Angler
by Jeffrey Cardenas, Jimmy Buffett; 2002; paperback 186pp

Jimmy Buffett from the Introduction: Jeffrey's skiff is warmed up and waiting, and this book is a vacant seat. Jump in . . .enjoy the ride.

Jack Nicklaus:

Jeffey is an eloquent and reflective writer who brings his passion for saltwater game fishing to life on each page.
reviewed:"Beyond Catching Fish,   The thing I love about this book is that it puts things in perspective. I love to salt water fly fish but it is the fishing and being around others who love the sport that makes it special. Catching and landing the fish is just the icing on the cake! I really like the way the author uses his real life experiences as a guide and fisherman. These are great stories and I like the look of the cover. It is a little pricy but it makes a great coffee table book...I feel it will be a collectible some day. I just hope Mr. Cardenas writes more to add to the collection."

Fly Fishing for Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon
Fly Fishing for Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon
by Lefty Kreh; 2002; paperback 160pp

Among the most prized fly-rod gamefish in salt water, bonefish, permit, and tarpon are also the most challenging species to take on fly tackle. Bonefish, called "gray ghosts of the flats," feed in skinny water, are very difficult to see, and in Lefty's words "are more nervous than a cat in a dog pound." And tarpon, called "silver kings," are famed as great leapers, grow to enormous size, and require special techniques to hook and land successfully. In this gorgeous, full-color book, world-renowned fly angler Lefty Kreh covers everything you need to know to capture all three species on the long rod, including tackle selection; leaders, knots and tippets; finding fish; wading techniques; how to fish from a boat; and techniques for striking, landing, and releasing your catch. (5 x 7 1/2, 160 pages, color photos)

Lefty Kreh is the most respected and best known fly-casting instructor and fly-fishing author in the world. For more than fifty years, he has travled the world with fly rod in hand.

The Book of the Tarpon
The Book of the Tarpon
by A.W. Dimock, Tosh Brown; 2004; hardcover 256pp

After an astonishing career on Wall Street, Anthony Weston Dimock pioneered the modern sport of tarpon fishing. This legendary 1911 masterwork embodies all of the expeditionary drama and excitement you would expect pursuing a primitive fish in primitive waters while using primitive equipment. It is a delight--vintage Florida and the Everglades teeming with leaping, crashing, somersaulting fish--defining, in many ways, what a great fishing book should be. With a new introduction by author/angler Tosh Brown, we are proud to publish this one again, our third edition.
