One Man, One Rifle, One Land : Hunting All Species of Big Game in North America
by J.Y. Jones; 2001; hardcover; 546pp
reviewed: "One of my all time favorites, When I received this book I was surprised at its size. It is larger in format and thicker than you will expect, and given the high quality glossy stock on which it is printed, it's heavy.
Each chapter of the book covers another subspecies of huntable game in North America including the jaguar (which the author darts). Each chapter is broken into two parts. In the first part Dr. Jones discusses the game itself, describing its ecology and history. These sections are very informative without being dry or boring. In the second section of each chapter Dr. Jones describes his own personal hunt for the animal.
I found this book impossible to stop reading. My procedure was to read a chapter each night before bed. Unfortunately, this led to some late nights for me. Sometimes I wanted to read the next chapter so bad I stayed up another 45 minutes just to get it in!
You may never hunt musk ox, or Peary's caribou, or a desert bighorn or jaguar. But this book will make you feel like you were right there with Dr. Jones as he hunts these animals.
This is not a how to book. While there are recommendations of equipment, these hunts were all guided and Dr. Jones focuses more on describing the game and hunt itself and his experiences than he does in trying to teach the reader how to hunt a particular animal.
This is superior piece of work. You will not regret buying it, even though you may lose a little sleep."

Specialized techniques used for each big game species and adaptations for the different habitat types in which each species is found provide interesting and useful information for experienced, as well as novice sportsmen. Each story is unique and each hunter has their own special way of capturing in words the intensity of their experiences. Hunting the Rockies: Home of the Giants
by Kirt I Darner; 1988; hardcover;
Soon after my first book, "How to Find Giant Bucks," was published in 1983, readers began encouraging me to write another book -- one that would cover elk, bighorn sheep, black bear and other Western big game along with more details on trophy mule deer hunting. Unlike the first book, this is not a series of detailed "how to" and "where to" chapters. Rather, this is for the most part a collection of fun-to-read hunting narratives with useful information woven into the text. A perceptive reader will learn a great deal even as he reads the stories. Some chapters have been contributed by friends who had worthwhile stories to tell. As with the first project, I decided to do it right.
My first book was full of photographs, including many color prints, but we've added even more color pictures to this volume. I've worked again with ghostwriter and rewrite expert, Rich LaRocco, because readers appreciate the way he makes stories come to life and imparts information in an easy-to-read, entertaining manner. I believe we make a good team. I've strived again to produce a first-class printing job with top-rate art, typesetting, color separations, laminated color cover, and so forth. I was raised by a father who believed that big-game hunting in the world's most healthful, invigorating and challenging activity. He taught me not only how to hunt but why I should hunt. It was through his example that I've learned to respect all animals -- game and non-game -- and to appreciate all the bounty that Mother Nature provides. I make no excuses for hunting, feeling sorry only for those who have never had the opportunity to bugle in a gigantic bull elk with antlers like tree branches, watch a gigantic desert bighorn ram walk on the skyline, revel in riding a good saddle horse in a pristine wilderness, or enjoy any of the many other priceless experiences I've been privileged to enjoy. My fondest hope is that you and I will be successful in preserving for generations to come the excitement and satisfaction of big-game hunting in the Rockies.
reviewed: "easy reading, entertaining stories the book provides entertaining stories of hunting trips by the author and his hunting buddies. while not overly emphasizing hunting strategies, the stories do touch on a few strategies required for successful hunting. overall a good, well written book.

reviewed: "A complete work for handgun hunting The best way I could explain my reaction to the book is that when I finished, I dragged out all of my handguns that could be considered hunting pieces, to compare them and their sighting systems to what I had just read about in the book. Then I began digging around to see when was the next near opportunity to get out and do a little handgun hunting. Great read, well done."

Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer
by Dwight Schuh; 2000; paperback;
reviewed: "the most comprehensive book on hunting mule deer I have been hunting mule deer for the last fifteen years. I read this book after hunting these deer for about eight or so years. I have found it to be the most complete book available about finding and stalking mule deer. It also goes indepth in equipment, scouting, tactics that really work and hunting the different seasons. Schuh bowhunts but this book can be used by all hunters, rifle and bow. It also will help you narrow down areas in which to hunt if you are going to an area you've never been before. You will maximize hunting time by learning where to start looking. It will cut down wandering all over the mountains looking for deer that usually are in small pockets. If planning an out of state hunt or just starting out hunting, this book is worth its weight in gold. I can not say enough positive things about this book. Schuh also publishes other books that are extremely well written and easy to read as well as useful.
