reviewed: "good book!
I was up in Alaska last week, and perused a version of this book in a Juneau bookstore. It is a very good book with nice targeted information, especially for the lesser known streams
which I was interested in. I compared it to another book I had on roadside fishing and this book was clearly more practical.

Flyfishing Alaska
by Anthony J. Route; 1995; paperback; 240pp
"Flyfishing Alaska" is the standard handbook for flyfishers headed north. Tony Route’s long experience as a year-round resident of Alaska shows in his descriptions of all the game fish available to the Alaskan angler and his insightful lessons on how to catch them.
reviewed: "A great guide to flyfishing the species of Alaska Throughout the book, he gives a sense of mastery gained from countless hours in the field. The chapter on flyfishing for Sockeyes alone is worth the price of the book. He debunks the myth that Sockeyes don't bite flies and lets you know how to present the fly to elicit a strike. I have never wanted to fish the Russian River like I did after reading that chapter.
I'd recommend it to anyone going up from the lower 48. Even if you are an experienced flyfisherman, this will help jump start your success with new species. "

Flies for Alaska: A Guide to Buying & Tying
by Anthony J. Route; 1991; spiral bound 188pp
The companion volume to Tony Route’s popular "Flyfishing Alaska," this book helps the reader select and tie the flies needed to take trout, char, and salmon throughout Alaska. Tony has chosen 46 proven flies based on his years of experience flyfishing Alaska’s rivers, lakes, and saltwater. Brief tying instructions are given for each fly, and the book is filled with anecdotes and fishing advice that make it easy for the visiting flyfisher to know which flies to take and how to fish them.
reviewed: "Worthwhile for all fly anglers, even non-tyers Route's guide gives a manageable list of flies along with a good amount of reasoning behind each. The timing/species charts are excellent in themselves. This volume is worthwhile for all fly anglers, even non-tyers. In addition to providing a guide for tying/buying flies for Alaska, it gives a good bit of how-to and even a hint of where-to. I used it prior to my most recent Alaskan venture and it was most useful. One question: Why no marabout spiders?

reviewed: "A True must for Kenai Area Fishermen If there ever was a perfect recipe for an area fishing guide, this is it. Beautiful photos, great maps, fantastic stories that bring the areas alive and just plain great advice. Atcheson, has created the mold that I wish others would follow for the other states and regions I fish. He covers the whole gamut of the Kenai Peninsula, not exhaustively, but by picking a handful of representative locations, fishing styles and target species. Then he gives away his fishing secrets like an old and trusted fishing buddy. In fact in his intro he says the book's first objective is to tell you where to fish."

The Milepost 2005: With Plan-a-Trip Map
by Kristine Valencia; paperback
Pound for pound and inch for inch, The Milepostis the most valuable piece of luggage you could include on a trip to Alaska and northwestern Canada, whether you're going by plane, car, bus, or bicycle. No wonder they're celebrating their fiftieth anniversary as the "Bible of North Country Travel." This is not a fluff and nonsense production, because there's serious driving to cover when you're heading to Anchorage or Denali Park, and you need to know things, like what the major highways and roads contain, mile-by-mile, where there are gas stations, campgrounds, fishing, lodging, and food, what the geography is like and what road conditions to expect. There's even some information on the history of the lands and communities, and what attractions are nearby. The maps are exceptional and the abundance of information remarkable, making this the most irreplaceable of guides for a trip up north.
reviewed: "INVALUABLE This is one of the most concise books you could wish to have with you on ANY road traveled in Alaska. If it says to beware of moose...BEWARE OF MOOSE!! LOL. It was extremely helpful when trying to figure out exactly where we were at at any given time. If you forget and leave home without it-never fear you can pick them up anywhere at the local convenience stores!! Dont forget to show them your Milepost to get your free ice cream at The Knotty Shop between Salcha and the North Pole on the Richardson Highway!!!"
